Overview

ProKennex’s racquetball site operates as a standalone experience connected to the main brand. The redesign aimed to modernize the site while maintaining brand consistency and better supporting the needs of both everyday players and sponsored athletes.

The Challenge

We partnered with the engineering lead to redesign the site under tight timeline and budget constraints. The experience needed to:

  • Align visually with the broader ProKennex brand
  • Support fast, repeat purchases for high-use gear
  • Provide detailed product information for high-consideration items like racquets
  • Accommodate sponsored players with exclusive pricing
  • Highlight sponsored athletes and racquetball champions to reinforce brand credibility and community

Research & Insights

I conducted user interviews and surveys to better understand player behaviors and needs. Key findings included:

  • Players often need to quickly reorder essentials (e.g., strings, goggles) when equipment breaks mid-season
  • Sponsored athletes require easy access to discounts, ideally through a dedicated login
  • Customers making larger purchases (like racquets) want in-depth product details to feel confident in their decision
  • Users were motivated by trust and performance credibility, making athlete visibility an important part of the experience
  • Speed and simplicity were critical—many users were returning customers with clear intent

My Role

UX/UI Designer

  • Led user research (interviews + surveys)
  • Created user flows and wireframes
  • Designed high-fidelity mockups in Figma
  • Collaborated closely with engineering to align on feasibility

Constraints & Approach

Due to timeline and budget limitations, we leveraged a WordPress template as the foundation for the redesign. Rather than building from scratch, I:

  • Adapted the template to support key user needs
  • Prioritized high-impact flows (reordering, product browsing)
  • Incorporated ProKennex branding and imagery for consistency
  • Designed within technical constraints to ensure efficient development

Solution

The final design focused on clarity, speed, and usability:

  • Streamlined Purchase Flow
Simplified navigation and checkout to support quick reorders of essential gear
  • Sponsored Player Login
Enabled access to exclusive pricing and a more personalized experience
  • Enhanced Product Pages
Added more detailed information for racquets, helping users make informed decisions
  • Athlete & Champion Spotlight
Featured sponsored players and racquetball champions to build trust, highlight performance, and strengthen brand identity
  • Brand Alignment
Maintained visual consistency with the main ProKennex site while improving overall usability

Outcome

The redesigned site was successfully developed and launched using WordPress, delivering a more efficient and user-friendly experience within project constraints.

Reflection

This project strengthened my ability to design within real-world limitations: balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints. I learned how to make thoughtful design decisions even when working within an existing system, and how to collaborate closely with engineering to bring a solution to life. If given more time, I would explore deeper personalization for returning users and further optimize the mobile purchasing experience.
